TRANE TCONT800 AS11AA Series Touch Screen Programmable Comfort Control Thermostat

I bought a house with one of these turds on the wall. According to prev owner, unit was replaced a few years ago with the rest of the HVAC system. She apparently never used the scheduling features because nothing was set up. I'm on a tiered power plan and tried to set a schedule based accordingly. I basically need the AC not to run from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM weekdays, which is very easy to program. However, the unit does not honor the program. It shuts off appropriately at 3:00 PM (where I have the kick-on temp set at 99), but then arbitrarily resets itself back to 78 degrees within the next 30 minutes. It displays the 'Hold temp until 6:00' message, but still resets back to 78. Double checked programming over and over - the unit simply disregards the settings. If I then manually adjust it back to 99, the AC shuts off, but then the thermostat will again at some point reset to 78. The only reliable (I think?) way I've found to keep it from coming back on is to simply turn it off when I want it off, and turn it back on when I want it on. Sort of defeats the purpose of a programmable thermostat.

I have 2 of these Trane TCONT800 installed in our house and they work great. After 3 years, 1 of the controller started getting "dead spots" on the touchscreen. The controller comes with a 5 year warranty. But, Trane does not have a direct warranty process for consumers. You must contact a Trane authorized dealer to handle the warranty. Dealers will charge you ~$100-$150 to come to your house and file the claim with Trane. I understand this is common for large appliances such as a central heater unit or air conditioner condensor, but not for a product that is design so consumer can easily remove and replace (the controller is designed to be removed from the wall mount so you can program it while sitting down).I think paying $100-150 to obtain warranty replacement for a $150 product is not consumer friendly. Trane, if you allow your products to be sold direct to consumers, you need to provide a consumer warranty process.

I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewer's comments. I've had this unit for less than 4 years, and it suddenly got a "dead spot" right on the part of the screen that turns the system on or off. Of course, it died while I had the system off, so I have no HVAC until the new thermostat arrives. Like the reviewer above, I'm being charged a $100 "warranty fee" to have someone come over and plug in a new one for me. I would never buy a trane thermostat again.
