Q: Can this replace an old siemens raa20 analouge

I'm afraid that's an almost impossible question to answer properly since the features the Siemens unit and the Honeywell thermostat are very different, and don't overlap in many details. It is 'similar' in that it will 'request' heat when the temperature falls below the (adjustable) setting. [This feature simply relies on a small relay closure within the Honeywell thermostat, but the wiring for this appears to be slightly different from that of the Siemens.] It does not offer any facility to request cooling. Also, be aware that this Honeywell thermostat uses 2 x AA batteries to maintain its time/temperature settings: this may not be 'appropriate' in certain circumstances where a public building is involved. This Honeywell thermostat is really only intended for domestic purposes. I would honestly recommend you approach a qualified heating engineer if you really need to replace the Siemens unit for any reason.

Q: why does it need batteries if it is wired?

The thermostat works like a light switch where it makes and breaks a live wire.So unless you had a 3 core cable going from the boiler to the thermostat you would need batteries to power it. The Thermostat requires a neutral wire and a live wire to power the display like a plug does.

Hi there, in short no. The CM921 is programmable, which means you can us it to set times for your heating to go on and off. The 842 is just a thermostat. This will only control the temperature of your heating. hope this helps.
